It’s important to note one thing about Jo and Ellen’s deaths.
Season five was intended by Kripke and all parties as the FINAL SEASON.
He was killing off everyone around Sam and Dean because the show was coming to an end.

Jo received so much hate mail that the network wanted to drop her after season two but she was Kripke’s favorite so he fought to keep her. Each season he would rework her character in an attempt to make her more likable to the viewers but hate mail kept coming and he constantly had to fight with the network to keep her. Kripke was leaving after season 5 and he knew that if they did manage to get picked up for a 6th season the network would never keep Jo because of all the hate mail. So he gave Jo a noble death while he still could and threw Ellen into it because he felt she wouldn’t want to live without her daughter

certain characters were killed in season 5 because it looked like the show was ending but Jo was killed because of the fans. Bela and Ruby were also killed because of hate mail and Lisa was written off for the same reason. 

Fans are the reason Jo died, stop blaming the writers for that

I see a lot of comments like this so I feel the need to stress that this is not a shipping problem. This is caused by the internalized misogyny that women are raised with. The hate for Jo, Bela, and Ruby started long before Castiel joined the cast and a large portion of the fandom never shipped Wincest, that means the majority of the hate came from non-shippers. Female on female hate was a problem long before shipping became popular. My mother talks about all the hate she heard from her female peers when a male celebrity/character would find a female love interest. The mindset was always “She’s not good enough for him.”

Women are raised to believe we’re in competition with other women for male affection. That internalized misogyny leads to some female fans sending hate/death threats to women they feel aren’t good enough for their favorite male celebrity or character. Now that shipping has become acceptable we’re seeing that internalized misogyny sometimes gets misplaced as loyalty to a ship, but make no mistake that it is misogyny. Women hating other women for being romantic interests is a product of how women are raised. Look at the movies geared toward young girls, they all involve romance as the main plot line. And in many of them, like Cinderella, the plot involves the man having his pick of many women but being won over by the female lead. Cinderella’s step-sisters, who were her competition for the prince’s affection, were ridiculed and humiliated which is another theme common in movies geared toward young girls. Women are raised to believe that we need to fight other women to obtain our ideal romance. We’re also taught that it’s acceptable to be cruel to the women who get in the way of us achieving that goal

This problem wont go away by blaming shippers because non-shippers also send hate and the root of the problem goes much deeper. The first step to stopping this is for everyone to recognize that this hatred toward other women comes from a place of internalized misogyny and it will only stop when we quit viewing other women as competition 

I was part of the pre-tumblr fanbase. Jo was hated because she was a romantic potential for Dean. Nothing more. A few fans did raise the somewhat valid point that she appeared far too young for Dean to realistically be interested in. But that’s a Hollywood casting issue. The hate surrounding Jo came because she was a threat. And this was long before Cas was a character.  It was actually back when most of the fans were shipping Wincest.

I also have not heard anything about Kripke considering Jo his favourite and google tells me quite the opposite:

He wasn’t surprised by the negative reaction, so he knew he hadn’t written an accessible female character but went ahead with it anyway?  Then just ditched her once he got the predicted negativity?  Did he really admit to just throwing a female character out to be slaughtered solely because he couldn’t write one properly??

Then we have this fuckery:

“I love the actress [Alona Tal], but the problem was, we conceived the character wrong. She was the girl next door, she was the little sister, and her attitude was, ‘How can I help you?’ And, [exec producer] Bob Singer and I always said to ourselves in Season 2, if we were to bring girls into the show, the way to bring them in is to make trouble for the guys, not to be helpful. To introduce them as their own fleshed-out characters in their own right, who are raging pains in the ass, and trouble, and dangerous, and then sort of see what happens.”

So…yeah.  Any likeability or realistic traits we see in Jo nowadays?  Those were what got her erased from the show.  Because Kripke didn’t like approachable, likeable real women characters.  And he bowed to what misogynistic fans wanted and decided to make the women all temptress antagonists from season 3-5.  Would explain why they ruined Anna too.
